Our mission

Why does HeadPeace exist ?

Mental health struggles are the main drivers of illness and disability in Northern Ireland.
  • 1 in 6 people, or approximately 45.8 million adults, report experiencing symptoms for common mental health problems, like anxiety and depression every week.
  • Nearly half (43.4%) of adults believe that they have had a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their life.
  • 61% of adults with mental health conditions do not receive treatment.
  • The amount of people with common mental health problems has risen by approximately 20% since 1993.
  • 14.3% of deaths worldwide, or approximately 8 million deaths each year, are attributable to mental health struggles.
  • 1 in 4 adults will experience at least one diagnosable mental health problem in the coming year.
  • Stress and anxiety in the workplace resulted in around £38 billion lost revenue for 2016-17.
  • 1 in 5 of us will have suicidal thoughts at some point in our lives.
  • Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 50. Men are 3 times more likely to die by suicide than women.
  • The suicide rate for females under 24 has seen the steepest increase since records began.
  • 45.2% of 16-year-olds in NI suffer mental ill-health.
  • There are over 200’000 suicide attempts each year across The UK and Ireland.
Individuals who experience  suicidal thoughts often suffer in silence. Studies show the majority of people who died by suicide saw a health care professional in the 12 months before their death. At HeadPeace we seek to support those who are struggling. We want everyone to know that HeadPeace is achievable. When people start to struggle, we want them to remember HeadPeace.
